14 Driving Offences That Can Lead to Vehicle Impoundment & Penalties in Dubai
Driving Offences That Can Lead to Vehicle Impoundment
Dubai Police have introduced stricter penalties for traffic violations, including the impoundment of vehicles for up to 30 days. The amendment aims to curb dangerous driving practices that threaten road safety. Here are the offences that can result in your vehicle being confiscated:
Using phone while driving has been defined as being distracted by devices. Sudden deviation of the vehicle in a manner that poses a danger to lives and property, or traffic safety, and not leaving enough safe distance from the vehicle in front will also result in the 30-days impoundment. The federal traffic law specifies fines of between Dh400 and Dh1,000 and four black points for these offences as well.
The Amendment Further Specified 14-Days Impoundment for These Offences
The amendment also lists traffic violations for heavy vehicles that will incur a 14-days impoundment period. These includes:
- Entering the road without making sure it is clear
- Reversing the vehicle in a manner that poses a danger to life or property or traffic safety
- Lane indiscipline
- Stopping in the middle of the road for no reason
- Dangerous overtaking
- Lack of necessary safety and security conditions in the vehicle
- Stopping the vehicle on the shoulder of the road in non-emergency situations,
- Overtaking vehicles from the shoulder
- Driving a vehicle without a licence plate
- Driving a vehicle in a manner that obstructs traffic
- Making changes to the vehicle colour without permission
Stricter Measures to Boost Road Safety
These penalties are part of Dubai's broader effort to improve road safety. Reckless driving was responsible for 94 accidents in the first half of 2024 alone, and authorities have been proactive in implementing measures to discourage dangerous behaviors. In a related effort last year, Dubai introduced a Dh50,000 fee for releasing vehicles impounded for severe traffic violations such as reckless driving or running a red light.
With these new rules in place, Dubai aims to reduce accidents and encourage responsible driving behavior.
